Bike libraries are local hubs that will allow children, young people and adults to borrow a bicycle, like a book, to try out. They aim to boost access to cycles and give people a chance to give cycling a go.
Bike libraries are generally based in the heart of a community, within easy reach by foot, in places such as community centres, schools, village halls or local business premises.
Bike libraries do accept donations of bikes. If you have a bike you no longer use and would like to donate then please contact your local bike library to discuss arranging this.
In Rochdale, your bike library is based at Kirkholt Medical Practice, The Strand, Kirkholt, Rochdale, OL11 2JG.
Other Local Libraries include Positive Steps, Medtia Place, 80 Union Street, Oldham, OL1 1DJ. 0161 621 9400.
Bike Libraries are now in the process of sourcing cycles and equipment, training volunteers, and securing the premises they’ll operate from. Many are planning to open for borrowers before the end of this year, so keep an eye on the Bike Library page on TfGM’s website for updates.
Bike Libraries work just like regular book libraries – after signing up to a Bike Library, members can borrow a bicycle free of charge, or for a small fee, for periods ranging from a day to a month.
Bike Libraries improve access to bikes and help both children and adults, either new to cycling or perhaps wanting to improve their cycling skills, try out a bike or use one regularly for a set period of time.
